Washington, D.C. — Rep. Barry Moore (AL-02) has joined forces with Rep. Dan Bishop and Rep. Harriet Hageman to co-sponsor the Censorship Accountability Act. This bill aims to give Americans the power to take legal action against federal officials who infringe upon their First Amendment rights.
Under current law, individuals can file lawsuits, called Bivens claims, against state employees who violate their constitutional rights. However, this legislation seeks to expand the existing legal framework to include federal executive branch employees. This would allow individuals to hold these employees accountable for any violations of their First Amendment rights, including instances of censorship on social media platforms.
Rep. Moore expressed his concerns about the Biden Administration's approach to censorship, stating, "Censorship and suppression has been the mission of the Biden Administration since his first day in office. But the First Amendment remains the law of the land. By providing the right to file suit against federal employees who violate the First Amendment, this legislation ensures that those who seek to censor Americans will have to answer for it in a court of law."
The Censorship Accountability Act aims to address the growing concerns of individuals who feel their voices are being stifled by government officials. By enabling citizens to seek legal recourse, this bill hopes to create a system of accountability for those who engage in censorship.
