Smiths Station’s varsity softball team has been fined and placed on probation after the school self-reported a violation of the Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) Contest Limitation Rule, according to a May 6 announcement.

The issue led to Smiths Station forfeiting all games in which a player participated over the allowed limit. The school will not take part in the AHSAA Central Regional softball qualifier tournament, despite its runner-up finish in the Class 7A, Area 4 tournament.

As a result of this decision, Auburn High School, which finished third in the area tournament, will advance into Smiths Station’s regional slot. Auburn is scheduled to play Baker High School in the first round of next week’s Central Regional game.

The AHSAA Contest Limitation Rule is designed to ensure fairness and maintain competitive balance among member schools by limiting how many contests student-athletes can participate in during a season. Violations can lead to penalties such as fines, probation, or removal from postseason play.

This action underscores how adherence to association rules affects postseason opportunities for high school athletic programs across Alabama.
