Representative Barry Moore from Alabama’s 1st District has reintroduced a legislative proposal aimed at dismantling the Department of Education. The reintroduced bill intends to shift education funding directly to states, empowering parents and local entities in shaping elementary and secondary education. The initiative is backed by Representatives John McGuire, Brandon Gill, and Eli Crane.
Moore criticized the current role of the Department of Education, asserting, “The Department of Education has turned into a breeding ground for political activists pushing anti-American ideologies.” He further emphasized the importance of parental control over educational content, adding, “Education should be a family decision, not a federal government decision. It’s time to give parents back the power over their children’s learning.”
The legislation highlights contentious issues such as policies requiring schools to acknowledge students based on their gender identity without necessitating updates to official records or parental approval. Furthermore, the bill mentions the incorporation of Critical Race Theory into educational curricula under the Biden Administration, which was later retracted by Education Secretary Miguel Cardona due to public disagreement.
Additionally, the reestablished Office of Safe and Supportive Schools aimed to promote gender sensitivity programs, drawing criticism from Moore and his co-sponsors.
