The City of Montgomery Office of Violence Prevention (OVP) will be observing National Gun Violence Month to raise awareness and honor those who have lost loved ones to gun violence. As part of this recognition, OVP will host a balloon release at Oak Park on Friday, June 2, 2023, at 5 p.m. On Saturday, June 3, our OVP will host a Gun Violence Walk in Gibbs Village at 11 am. As part of this walk, Montgomery citizens will come together to show their solidarity and raise awareness. During events, participants are encouraged to wear orange.

Last year, President Biden signed into law the most significant gun violence reduction legislation enacted in nearly 30 years. Together with MPD, we will continue to fight gun violence and make our communities safer by implementing the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act. Under the leadership of Mayor Steven L. Reed, crime in Montgomery continues to drop:
• Homicides fell by more than 15% YOY
• MPD boasts a 70% clearance rate
• Overall crime dropped down 20% YOY
However, the City of Montgomery is committed to reducing gun violence in the community. We encourage everyone to come out and support the cause and to make their voices heard. Together, we can make a difference. The OVP is dedicated to working with the community to end gun violence in Montgomery.
The Office of Violence Prevention (OVP) offers a comprehensive approach to community safety challenges including all programs and collaborative efforts within the community. The Department works to reduce the risk of violence through linked strategies in partnership with government, non-profit, neighborhood, and faith organizations by utilizing data-driven programs to address community needs and implement violence intervention.
